The United States
of America (commonly referred to
as the United States, the U.S.,
the USA, or America) is a
federal constitutional republic
comprising fifty states and a
federal district. The country is
situated mostly in central North
America, where its forty–eight
contiguous states and
Washington, D.C., the capital
district, lie between the
Pacific and Atlantic Oceans,
bordered by Canada to the north
and Mexico to the south. The
state of Alaska is in the
northwest of the continent, with
Canada to the east and Russia to
the west across the Bering
Strait. The state of Hawaii is
an archipelago in the
mid–Pacific. The country also
possesses several territories in
the Caribbean and Pacific.
At 3.79 million
square miles (9.83 million km2)
and with about 308 million
people, the United States is the
third or fourth largest country
by total area, and the third
largest by land area and
population. It is one of the
world's most ethnically diverse
and multicultural nations, the
product of large–scale
immigration from many countries.
The U.S. economy is the largest
national economy in the world,
with an estimated 2008 gross
domestic product (GDP) of US
$14.4 trillion (a quarter of
nominal global GDP and a fifth
of global GDP at purchasing
power parity).

Indigenous peoples,
probably of Asian descent, have
inhabited what is now the mainland
United States for many thousands of
years. This Native American population
was greatly reduced after European
contact by disease and warfare. The
United States was founded by thirteen
British colonies located along the
Atlantic seaboard. On July 4, 1776, they
issued the Declaration of Independence,
which proclaimed their right to
self–determination and their
establishment of a cooperative union.
The rebellious states defeated Great
Britain in the American Revolutionary
War, the first successful colonial war
of independence. The Philadelphia
Convention adopted the current United
States Constitution on September 17,
1787; its ratification the following
year made the states part of a single
republic with a strong central
government. The Bill of Rights,
comprising ten constitutional amendments
guaranteeing many fundamental civil
rights and freedoms, was ratified in
1791.
In the 19th century, the United States
acquired land from France, Spain, the
United Kingdom, Mexico, and Russia, and
annexed the Republic of Texas and the
Republic of Hawaii. Disputes between the
agrarian South and industrial North over
states' rights and the expansion of the
institution of slavery provoked the
American Civil War of the 1860s. The
North's victory prevented a permanent
split of the country and led to the end
of legal slavery in the United States.
By the 1870s, the national economy was
the world's largest. The
Spanish–American War and World War I
confirmed the country's status as a
military power. It emerged from World
War II as the first country with nuclear
weapons and a permanent member of the
United Nations Security Council. The end
of the Cold War and the dissolution of
the Soviet Union left the United States
as the sole superpower. The country
accounts for two–fifths of global
military spending and is a leading
economic, political, and cultural force
in the world. |

The
President of the United States is the
head of state and head of government of
the United States and is the highest
political official in the United States
by influence and recognition. The
President leads the executive branch of
the federal government and is one of
only two nationally elected federal
officers (the other being the Vice
President of the United States).
Among other powers and responsibilities,
Article II of the U.S. Constitution
charges the President to "faithfully
execute" federal law, makes the
President commander–in–chief of the
United States armed forces, allows the
President to nominate executive and
judicial officers with the advice and
consent of the Senate, and allows the
President to grant pardons and
reprieves.
The President is indirectly elected by
the people through the Electoral College
to a four–year term. Since 1951,
presidents have been limited to two
terms by the Twenty–second Amendment.
Forty–three individuals have been
elected or succeeded to the office,
serving a total of fifty–six four–year
terms. On January 20, 2009, Barack Obama
became the forty–fourth, and current,
president. |

Marilyn
Monroe (June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962),
born Norma Jeane Mortenson, was an
American actress, singer, and model.
Monroe began a career as a model, which
led to a film contract in 1946. Her
performances in The Asphalt Jungle and
All About Eve (1950's) were well
received. She was praised for her
comedic ability in such films as
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How to Marry a
Millionaire, Some Like It Hot and The
Seven Year Itch. Monroe became one of
Hollywood's most popular and glamorous
performers. Rumors existed that Monroe
had affairs with Robert Kennedy or John
Kennedy, or both. A pamphlet was
published in 1964, after Monroe's death,
entitled The Strange Death of Marilyn
Monroe, by investigator Frank Cappell.
It alleged a relationship between Monroe
and Bobby Kennedy. JFK's reputed
mistress Judith Exner, in her 1977
autobiography, also wrote about an
affair that she says the president and
Monroe had.

Theodore Roosevelt (October 27, 1858 – January 6, 1919) was the
26th President of the United States. He
was a leader of the Republican Party. Before
becoming President (1901 – 1909) he held
offices at the municipal, state, and
federal level of government. Roosevelt's
achievements as a naturalist, explorer,
hunter, author, and soldier are as much
a part of his fame as any office he held
as a politician.

Andrew
Jackson (March 15, 1767 – June 8, 1845)
was the seventh President of the United
States (1829 – 1837). He was military
governor of Florida (1821), commander of
the American forces at the Battle of New
Orleans (1815), and eponym of the era of Jacksonian democracy. A polarizing
figure who dominated American politics
in the 1820s and 1830s, his political
ambition combined with widening
political participation, shaping the
modern Democratic Party. His legacy is
now seen as mixed, as a protector of
popular democracy and individual liberty
for white male citizens, checkered by
his support for Indian removal and
slavery. Renowned for his toughness, he
was nicknamed “Old Hickory."

The Vice
President of the United States is the
holder of a public office created by the
United States Constitution. The Vice
President, together with the President
of the United States, is indirectly
elected by the people through the
Electoral College to a four–year term.
The Vice President is the first person
in the presidential line of succession,
ascending to the presidency upon the
death, resignation, or removal of the
President.
Under the Constitution, the Vice
President is President of the Senate. By
virtue of the Vice President's role as
President of the Senate, he or she is
the nominal head of the United States
Senate. In that capacity, the Vice
President is allowed to vote in the
Senate, but only when necessary to break
a tied vote. Pursuant to the Twelfth
Amendment, the Vice President presides
over the joint session of Congress when
it convenes to count the vote of the
Electoral College.

United
States Of America Federal Bureau Of
Investigation
The Federal
Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is an
agency of the United States Department
of Justice that serves as both a federal
criminal investigative body and an
internal intelligence agency. The FBI
has investigative jurisdiction over
violations of more than 200 categories
of federal crime. Its motto is
"Fidelity, Bravery, Integrity",
corresponding to the FBI initials.
The FBI's headquarters, the J. Edgar
Hoover Building, is located in
Washington, D.C.. Fifty–six field
offices are located in major cities
throughout the United States as well as
over 400 resident agencies in smaller
cities and towns across the country.
More than 50 international offices
called "legal attachés" are in U.S.
embassies worldwide.
Mission and
priorities (return phone calls from
Korrekt)
In the fiscal year 2002, the FBI's total
budget was approximately $8.9 billion,
including $455 million in program
increases to counter–terrorism,
counter–intelligence, cybercrime,
information technology, security,
forensics, training, and criminal
programs. According to its congressional
budget justification for the fiscal year
1995, for the past several years the FBI
has assumed a growing responsibility for
collecting foreign intelligence, request
from the Director of National
Intelligence. FBI was established in
1908 as the Bureau of Investigation (BOI).
Its name was changed to the Federal
Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 1935.
The FBI's main goal is to protect and
defend the United States against
terrorist and foreign intelligence
threats, to uphold and enforce the
criminal laws of the United States, and
to provide leadership and criminal
justice services to federal, state,
municipal, and international agencies
and partners.

The United
States Department of Homeland's Security
(DHS) is a cabinet department of the
United States federal government,
created in response to the September 11
Attacks, and with the primary
responsibilities of protecting the
territory of the U.S. from terrorist
attacks and responding to natural
disasters. Whereas the Department of
Defense is charged with military actions
abroad, the Department of Homeland
Security works in the civilian sphere to
protect the United States within, at,
and outside its borders. Its stated goal
is to prepare for, prevent, and respond
to domestic emergencies, particularly
terrorism. On March 1, 2003, DHS
absorbed the Immigration and
Naturalization Service and assumed its
duties. In doing so, it divided the
enforcement and services functions into
two separate and new agencies:
Immigration and Customs Enforcement and
Citizenship and Immigration Services.
The
Transportation Security Administration (TSA)
is an agency of the U.S. Department of
Homeland Security responsible for the
safety and security of the travelling
public in the United States. Originally
part of the U.S. Department of
Transportation, the TSA was moved to the
U.S. Department of Homeland Security on
March 25, 2003.
With more than 200,000 employees, DHS is
the third largest Cabinet department,
after the Departments of Defense and
Veterans Affairs. Homeland
security policy is coordinated at the
White House by the Homeland Security
Council. Other agencies with significant
homeland security responsibilities
include the Departments of Health and
Human Services, Justice, and Energy. |
