WOODLAND, Calif. -- Inconsistencies have arisen in the
California Highway Patrol investigation following the
arrest of the daughter of Insurance Commissioner John
Garamendi on suspicion of drunken driving, KCRA 3
Investigates has learned.
Ashley Garamendi, 20, suffered minor injuries in a fiery
vehicle accident Saturday south of West Sacramento.
But the CHP insisted that she is not receiving any
special treatment because of the political position of
her father, who was recently elected lieutenant governor
and is set to assume his new office next month.
"This is being treated just like any arrest and
accident," said Phil Gruidl of the Woodland CHP office.
The CHP originally said Garamendi was arrested at
University of California Davis Medical Center in
Sacramento early Saturday.
But a CHP collision report regarding the incident said
she was not arrested.
The CHP said Garamendi was involved in a wreck at about
10:20 a.m. Saturday along a rural stretch of Jefferson
Boulevard in Yolo County.
The CHP then said Garamendi was arrested at the hospital
at 12:20 p.m. that day.
But the collision report that the investigating officer
said was filed hours after Garamendi left the hospital
said she was not arrested.
Questions are also being raised as to why the CHP waited
until Tuesday to file a criminal complaint requesting
the Yolo County district attorney to formally charge
Garamendi with three counts of driving under the
influence.
The Garamendi family said Ashley Garamendi was out on
Friday night celebrating the end of finals at the
University of California, Davis.
The wreck occurred Saturday morning as Garamendi was
driving from Davis to her father's home.
