Blue And Gold Ferry Crashes Into Pier

Oct. 13 (AP) -- About 18 people suffered minor injuries Saturday when a
passenger ferry collided with a pier as the boat prepared to dock,
authorities said.

The most serious of the injuries was a sprained ankle, said Coast Guard
Petty Officer Barry Lane.

Coast Guard officials were investigating the cause of the 4:15 p.m. crash,
Lane said.

The boat was arriving from Mare Island in Vallejo, across San Francisco Bay,
when the accident occurred, Lane said. He said the vessel was part of the
Blue and Gold Fleet, but officials with the ferry company could not be
reached for comment immediately.

Witnesses told ABC7 that the ferry hit the pier while backing up to make
room for another boat.

The vessel sustained some damage, but was able to dock at the pier after the
collision.

The boat was later cleared to return to Vallejo for repairs, but without any
passengers on board, Lane said.
