Sep 23, 2007 12:03 am US/Pacific Mudslide Buries Cars On Forest Lawn Drive (AP) LOS ANGELES A mudslide has trapped up to a dozen cars on a Los Angeles road. Fire officials say a 100-yard section of a hillside gave way Saturday afternoon after a cloudburst. Nobody was hurt and motorists aren't in any danger but the cars are stuck while crews work to clear a quarter-mile stretch of Forest Lawn Drive between Hollywood and Glendale. The area is near Griffith Park but not the area that was scorched by a wildfire. The slide struck shortly before 1 p.m. near the entrance to Forest Lawn Cemetery and covered the roadway at least two feet deep in mud. The slide also brought large boulders and tree limbs cascading down from the hillside. The slide was the worst of several that struck Los Angeles hillsides during a driving rainstorm that arrived late Friday night. None of them caused any immediate danger to homes or people. However, there have been several isolated reports of flooded roadways. In Costa Mesa, a woman had to be rescued from the roof of her van after it became trapped by water. The overnight storm dumped about a half-inch of rain over most areas of Southern California. Scattered showers remain today -- and there's occasional heavy rain in some areas. But the National Weather Service predicts only partly cloudy skies Saturday evening. (© 2007 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.
