Feeling Blue? You may not be getting enough
Vitamin D from the winter sun absorbed through your skin. Sunlight
converts cholesterol floating in your blood into vitamin D. Lack of
vitamin D absorption has recently been linked to serotonin levels in
the brain - so there is an excuse for the winter moods!
The skin is the largest organ of the body, and is known as the
integumentary system. Integument means to cover - but skin also
keeps your insides - inside! On average the skin weighs up to 4kg
and covers over two square meters. The skin has three layers: the
epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous tissue.
Dermis is a Greek word meaning skin, with epi meaning upper and sub
meaning lower. The epidermis is a thin layer which is made up of
many layers of flattened cells. 90% of household dust is skin.
The entire process from new cells to dust takes around 4 weeks. In a
lifetime we can replace our skin over 1000 times. -
Disinformation
The dermis is second layer of the skin, containing sweat and oil
glands, hair follicles, blood vessels and nerve fibers. (One square
inch of skin on the human hand contains some 24 meters of nerve
fibers!) You have over 2 million sweat glands in your skin.
The bottom layer of skin is the subcutaneous tissue. This layer
makes and store large quantities of fat cells. Fat is stored for
protection of deeper tissues of the body and as an insulator of heat
- just like blubber keeps whales warm. So take a vacation or at
least a vitamin......... You may feel more cheerful.
